Green Initiatives
Atlanta has received recognition for leading the southeast in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-registered buildings with over 140 building awaiting certification from the US Green Building Council, ranking the city 3rd out of 50 populous metro cities in terms of GREEN buildings (SustainLane.com). We must continue our efforts towards green initiatives and make our district to the city of Atlanta as the leader in green initiatives.
SOLUTION
- Parks
We must maintain and increase our current green space in the district and City of Atlanta. Our parks are a tremendous asset to this great city. We must continue to increase security in these areas where people go for enjoyment. We need to protect the amenities, such as swimming pools, that our residents, and especially our youth, can use as a resource. We must maintain and re-open the recreational centers, such as the tennis and swimming facilities. Grants to local high schools for park restoration is one initiative that might be possible in the future. Engaging our youth and encouraging their creativity for sustaining our parks could be a win-win for all. When new development is needed, I will advocate for more green space, especially in areas surrounding parks in the district/city. - Recycling
I WILL WORK to make Atlanta among the TOP 10 recycling cities by providing recycling containers in all parks, neighborhoods, and schools, and ensuring that garbage that is recyclable is efficiently retrieved. I would encourage that all long-term print, such as menus, brochures, pamphlets, be on recycled paper. Part of our green initiative is to increase air quality by decreasing car dependency and improving public transportation. - “Getting Greenly Creative”
We can once again generate creativity in our community by providing Citizen Enviro-Grants for ideas from residents, students, churches, local communities and local businesses. A similar approach has been implemented in Minneapolis where mini-grants ranging from $1,000-$10,000 were distributed to community groups to develop environmentally friendly ideas for the city.
